What an interior designer comes home to

The most demanding client for any interior designer is themselves. Marietta Kiesling has designed an exceptional home for herself, close to the centre of Vienna. Striking yet cosy, she has made full use of the, sometimes awkward, space, especially in the kitchen.

Warm wooden cabinetry and organic green marble countertops and wall panels extend into the living room, conjoining the two rooms into one environment. For Marietta this was an important element of the design: “That the kitchen fits into the living feeling and that the rooms can connect with each other - a kind of extension of the living room.” While the functional aspects of the kitchen are not forgotten, they are not the total story: “It should not be a “Kitchen-working” place, but a “kitchen-living” place. I aim to create the best ways to cook comfortably, put away the shopping or the dishwasher, and at the same time how can I design the room so that it remains or becomes communicative.”

“Gaggenau has been with me for many, many years, both in private use and in projects. The fact that I wanted to install Gaggenau appliances in my own four walls was not really up for discussion.”

Marietta doesn’t seek to disguise the kitchen’s purpose, simply expand it, celebrate it, revel in it. “After a while everyone gathers in the Kitchen.” It is, after all, the room that offers a reward for every sense. “Materials play a big role in my designs. I’m a very visual person, but I stroke all surfaces. It’s especially important to me that it feels good and that I live with high-quality and natural materials.”

While her style is a constantly evolving journey, adapting to each project, there are constants. A combination of aesthetic, function and materiality defines Marietta’s approach to her interiors and what she places within them. Hence Gaggenau is her professional and personal preference. When asked about her favourite appliance the answer is spontaneous: “The Combi-steam oven!” Its versatility and convenience make getting acquainted with its use easy, enjoyable and hugely rewarding.
